About

Portrait of artist Fanny Flaesa wearing a colorful textile garment

Fanny Flaesa (b. 2001) is an interdisciplinary artist from South Tyrol. Fanny Flaesa works across textile art, tailoring, mixed-media painting, sculpture and performance.

Guided by the principle Thema ante medium, Fanny Flaesa begins with a narrative, philosophical inquiry or text and then chooses the medium and technique that best embodies it. Fanny Flaesa brings academic theory into contact with raw material craftsmanship.

Raised among the alpine landscapes of South Tyrol, Fanny Flaesa draws on regional folklore, fairy tales, Catholic traditions and inherited craft. These references meet feminist perspectives, questions of identity and body politics, and what Fanny Flaesa calls cursed realism - a worldview used to push dogmatic systems toward the absurd.

Fanny Flaesa studied Fine Art at Hochschule für Gestaltung Offenbach from 2022 to 2024 and Philosophy and Theology at Goethe University Frankfurt from 2020 to 2024. Before university, Fanny Flaesa completed high school at a Catholic school in South Tyrol.

Fanny Flaesa's material practice has also been shaped by architectural restoration and fresco conservation at Pescoller Werkstätten in Bruneck. Since 2026, Fanny Flaesa has taught Fashion & Costume Design at Kunstgymnasium Bruneck.
